Innovation abounds in The Canberra Hospitals’ Intensive Care Unit

We’ve seen a number of ‘firsts’ recently as more and more healthcare facilities adopt a technology led approach to clinician and patient safety.

At the forefront of innovation in the Australian Capital Territory, The Canberra Hospital has recently had both a first for Australia and a first for the ACT.

In an Australian first, The Canberra Hospital chose to install continuous light disinfection technology, Indigo-Clean, into the ICU.  This safe, continuous, visible light disinfection system is proven to kill harmful viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2 (the virus causing COVID-19), Influenza-A and bacteria linked to Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI’s). Adopted by hospitals worldwide and installed in a number of Operating Rooms in Australia, the installation at Canberra Hospital into an ICU is the first Australian installation outside of an OR.

Using a combination of safe 405nm Indigo and White LEDs, Indigo-Clean technology emits a narrow spectrum light that disinfects while providing ambient illumination. Whether used in ambient white disinfection mode or indigo disinfection mode, Indigo-Clean is always safe, which means no interruption to patient care.

In an additional first, the Hospital has installed the first Patient Lift Pendants with GoLift into an ICU in the ACT. That means that in every ICU bay, staff are now able to safely mobilise and move patients, with the process usually only requiring two people, minimising the potential for any manual handling injuries and generally requiring less staff than before.

The ACT Government is expanding The Canberra Hospital to include a new Critical Services Building at the existing hospital campus in Woden. The nearly 40,000sqm new facility will enable a bigger, better Canberra Hospital to meet the needs of the growing city and the region.

We can’t wait to see what other innovations The Canberra Hospital introduces as it continues to grow.
